AI & API integration

The GPS tracker you can talk to: ChatGPT, Claude and an open API

Vectra GPS connects to ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and any other Model Context Protocol client with one URL and one API key. Ask "where is every boat right now?" in plain English, or build on the REST API yourself. Both are included on every plan — no integration fee, no enterprise tier.

Set up in two minutes

  1. Create a key. Settings → API keys in the Vectra dashboard. Start read-only.
  2. Add the connector. Paste https://api.vectragps.com/mcp and your key into ChatGPT, Claude or your MCP client.
  3. Ask. "Which boats are outside the no-wake zone?" "Did anything hit anything last weekend?"

Step-by-step guides: ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Claude Code and other MCP clients.

What the assistant can do

fleet_summary
"How is the fleet doing?" — moving, parked, offline, low battery, anything needing attention.
list_assets
Every boat and vehicle, with status and last position.
locate_asset
"Where is Pontoon 22?" — current position, speed and heading.
get_trail
"Where did the jet ski go this afternoon?" — the route over any window.
recent_alerts
"What alerted overnight?" — impacts, capsize, geofence exits, tamper.
list_geofences
The zones you have drawn, and what is inside them.
set_storage_mode
Put a boat into winter storage mode to protect its battery.
set_engine_cutoff
Remote engine cut-off — only with a control-enabled key, and only after the assistant asks you to confirm.

For developers

Claude Desktop, Cursor and most MCP clients:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "vectra": {
      "url": "https://api.vectragps.com/mcp",
      "headers": { "X-API-Key": "vgps_your_key_here" }
    }
  }
}

OpenAI Responses API, remote MCP tool:

from openai import OpenAI

client = OpenAI()
resp = client.responses.create(
    model="gpt-5",
    tools=[{
        "type": "mcp",
        "server_label": "vectra",
        "server_url": "https://api.vectragps.com/mcp",
        "headers": {"Authorization": "Bearer vgps_your_key_here"},
        "require_approval": "always",
    }],
    input="Which boats left the marina geofence today?",
)
print(resp.output_text)

Plain REST:

curl https://api.vectragps.com/vectra/devices \
  -H "X-API-Key: vgps_your_key_here"
Every asset with its latest position. Full reference in the dashboard under API docs.

The endpoint is stateless Streamable HTTP, rate-limited per key, and uses the exact permission model as the REST API. Rotating the key rotates AI access with it.

Safe by default

A key only does what you scoped it to do. Read-only keys can see the fleet and nothing else. The engine cut-off needs a control-enabled key, and the server instructs every assistant to ask the human first and pass an explicit confirmation — it will not immobilise a boat on a guess, and the command is refused outright while the boat is moving.

For showing one boat to one customer, use a share link instead of a key: it expires and shows nothing else.

Common questions

Can I connect ChatGPT to my GPS tracker?
Yes, with Vectra GPS. Vectra serves a Model Context Protocol (MCP) endpoint at https://api.vectragps.com/mcp. Add it as a custom connector in ChatGPT (developer mode), paste your Vectra API key, and ask things like "which boats are moving right now?". Developers can use the same endpoint from the OpenAI Responses API as a remote MCP tool.
Does Vectra GPS work with Claude?
Yes. Add Vectra as a connector in Claude, Claude Desktop or Claude Code using the same MCP URL and API key. Claude can locate assets, pull trails, summarise the fleet and read recent alerts.
Which GPS tracker has an open API?
Vectra GPS includes a documented REST API on every plan at no extra cost — no enterprise tier, no integration fee. Every plan includes the REST API at no extra cost. Create a scoped key in Settings → API keys, and the same key powers the API, the MCP server and every AI assistant you connect. Read-only keys cannot touch the engine cut-off.
Can an AI assistant turn off my boat engine?
Only if you let it. Keys are scoped, and a read-only key cannot reach the engine cut-off at all. With a control-enabled key the assistant must ask you in plain words and get an explicit yes before it sends the command.
Does the AI integration cost extra?
No. The MCP server and the REST API are included in the normal service price of $59.94/year ($4.99/month) or $9.99/month. You pay your AI provider for your own ChatGPT or Claude plan as usual.
Can I use my own GPS tracker with the Vectra API?
Yes, if it speaks JT808 — most hardwired 4G trackers do. Point it at Vectra and it shows up in the dashboard, the API and every connected AI assistant like a Vectra unit. See vectragps.com/connect.
