Start with the type, not the brand
Most bad tracker purchases are not a bad brand — they are the wrong category for the job. There are four, and the gap between them is far larger than the gap between competing products inside one.
Type 1 of 4
Bluetooth tag (AirTag, Tile)
Broadcasts a short-range beacon that nearby phones relay back to you. There is no GPS receiver and no cellular radio in the device at all.
Good for
Finding a dinghy in a crowded marina, or a trailer parked in a busy lot where other phones pass by constantly.
Wrong for
Anything on open water. Position depends entirely on someone else's phone walking past, so a boat two miles offshore reports nothing.
Typical cost: About $30, no recurring fee.
Genuinely the right answer for low-value gear in populated places. Not a theft-recovery device, and no honest seller should market it as one.
Type 2 of 4
Battery-powered GPS tracker
A real GPS receiver plus a cellular modem, running on an internal battery. Reports on a schedule — often every few minutes while moving, then sleeps.
Good for
Assets with no 12V supply: a towed trailer, a container, a piece of equipment dropped on a site for a week.
Wrong for
Anything you need continuous coverage on. The battery is the whole limitation — frequent reporting drains it in days, and a thief who finds it simply removes it.
Typical cost: Roughly $50-150 for hardware, plus $5-25 a month for the SIM and platform.
A reasonable fallback where there is no power to tap. Treat the reporting interval on the box as a best case.
Type 3 of 4
Hardwired 4G GPS tracker
Wired into the vessel's 12V system, so it runs continuously and can also read ignition state. A backup cell keeps it alive if main power is cut.
Good for
Rental fleets, any boat worth recovering, and anything where you need to know the moment it moves rather than the next time it wakes up.
Wrong for
Assets with no electrical system, and owners unwilling to make three wire connections or pay someone to.

Type 4 of 4
Satellite tracker
Reports over Iridium or Globalstar instead of cellular, so it works with no cell coverage anywhere on earth.
Good for
Offshore passages, commercial vessels, anything that spends real time beyond cellular range.
Wrong for
Coastal and inland operations, where you pay a large premium for coverage you never use.
Typical cost: Hardware often $400-1,500, airtime $30-100+ a month.
Correct and necessary offshore. Overkill for a rental fleet that never leaves the bay — a 4G tracker that buffers positions covers the same gaps for a fraction of the cost.
Six specifications that decide the outcome
Once you have settled on a hardwired 4G tracker, these are the questions that separate a device that recovers a boat from one that tells you it is gone.
Reporting interval while moving
This is the number that decides whether you recover a stolen boat or file a report. A tracker reporting every five minutes gives a thief a five-minute head start on every position you have; on the water that is a wide search area. Ask specifically about the interval in motion, not the marketing headline — many trackers quote their best case and drop to a slower cadence to save battery.

What happens when the power is cut
The first thing anyone stealing a boat does is pull the obvious wires. A tracker with no backup cell and no tamper alert simply goes dark, and you learn about the theft when you next look at the map. The behaviour you want is an immediate alert on power loss, followed by continued reporting from an internal battery.
Ask whether power-loss triggers an alert, and how long the backup cell reports for.
Geofencing that actually notifies you
Almost everything claims geofencing. The differences that matter: how many zones you can draw, whether alerts arrive by SMS as well as push (a push notification on a phone in a pocket at a busy dock is not an alert), and whether you can act on the alert directly rather than logging in somewhere else.
Ask for unlimited zones and SMS delivery, and check whether alerting costs extra.
Draw on the vessel battery
A hardwired tracker sits on your battery all winter. Without deep-discharge protection it will happily flatten the battery it is wired to, and you find out in spring. Look for a documented sleep or storage mode and a low-voltage cutoff that shuts the device down above safe-start voltage.
Ask for the current draw in storage mode and the cutoff voltage.
Who owns the hardware
Some fleet platforms lease you the device and reclaim it when you leave, which makes switching providers expensive by design. Owning the hardware outright means a cancelled subscription leaves you with a tracker you can reactivate or repurpose.
Ask whether you own the device after cancelling, and whether there is an early-termination fee.
Whether it does anything besides show a dot
For a single private boat, a dot on a map is enough. For a rental fleet it is not: you need utilisation per asset, trip history you can hand an insurer, share links so dock staff can see one boat without an account, and ideally an API so the tracking data reaches whatever you already run the business on.
Ask to see a real report, not a screenshot of the map.
Six red flags
"No monthly fee" on a device that claims live tracking. Cellular data is not free; either it is a Bluetooth tag, or you are expected to supply the SIM, or the fee arrives later.
A reporting interval quoted without saying whether the asset is moving or parked.
No published return policy, or a restocking fee on a device you cannot evaluate without installing.
Reviews that all appear in the same week, or a star rating with no reviews visible on the page.
A "lifetime" plan from a company younger than the lifetime being promised.
No mention of what happens when the device leaves cellular coverage.
What to buy, by situation
One privately owned boat kept at a marina
A hardwired 4G tracker is worth it if the boat is worth more than a few thousand dollars, mostly for the insurance discount and the peace of mind over winter. If it is a dinghy or a kayak, buy a Bluetooth tag and spend the difference on a better lock.

A rental fleet of 5-50 boats or ATVs
Hardwired, every unit, no exceptions. At this size the tracker stops being theft insurance and starts being an operations tool: geofences keep renters inside the area you are insured for, utilisation data tells you which assets to buy more of, and the trip history settles disputes about damage and hours.

Depends on power. If the machine has a 12V system, hardwire. If it is a generator, a light tower or a container, a battery tracker with a long reporting interval is the practical answer — you want to know it moved, not watch it sit still.

We are not the right answer for a single kayak, for a container with no power, or for a boat crossing an ocean. Those are the first, second and fourth rows of the table above, and the guide says so on purpose.
For any boat worth recovering, a hardwired 4G GPS tracker. Is there a boat GPS tracker with no monthly fee?
Not one that tracks in real time. A live tracker needs a cellular SIM and data, which nobody supplies for free. Devices advertised with no monthly fee are either Bluetooth tags with roughly 100 metres of range, or they expect you to buy and pay for your own SIM. The nearest honest equivalent is a plan with a long free period — Vectra's annual plan is free for its first 122 days.
How often should a boat GPS tracker report its position?
Every 10 to 30 seconds while the asset is moving. That interval sets the size of the search area if the asset is stolen: a tracker reporting every five minutes gives a thief a five-minute head start on every position you hold. Parked reporting can be far slower without any loss, and slowing it down is how a well-designed tracker protects the vessel battery.
Will a GPS tracker drain my boat battery over winter?
It will if it has no storage mode. A hardwired tracker sits on the battery continuously, so look for a documented low-power or storage mode and a deep-discharge cutoff that shuts the device down before the battery drops below safe starting voltage. Ask for the current draw in storage mode and the cutoff voltage as specific numbers.
Does a GPS tracker reduce boat insurance premiums?
Often. Many insurers offer 10-25% off for GPS-tracked vessels because a tracked boat is far more likely to be recovered. The discount is not automatic — you have to tell the insurer and usually supply evidence the tracker is installed and active, so choose a platform that can produce a tracking report on demand.
